Tips To Help Create The Exercise Habit

Monday, September 14, 2009

We all know the benefits of exercise but starting and keeping the exercise habit is sometimes hard.

Here are some tips that will help you start and stick with it:

  1. Ensure you are performing fitness, strength & flexibility exercises.
  2. Get a partner. Exercising with a friend or relative can make it more fun.
  3. Vary your routine. You may be less likely to get bored or injured if you change your exercise routine.
  4. Engage a personal trainer. The trainer will provide support, motivation, accountability & inspiration.
  5. Choose a comfortable time of day. Don't work out too soon after eating. Wait until later in the day if you're too stiff in the morning.
  6. Don't get discouraged. It can take weeks or months before you notice some of the changes from exercise, such as weight loss.
  7. Forget "no pain, no gain." While a little soreness is normal after you first start exercising, pain isn't. Take a break if you hurt or if you are injured.
  8. Stick to a regular time every day.
  9. Sign a contract committing you to exercise.
  10. Put "exercise appointments" on your calendar.
  11. Keep a daily log or diary of your exercise activities.
  12. Check your progress.

Remember that its motivation that gets you started but habit is what keeps you going.
