Going for a walk is much better for you than sitting on the couch but is it enough?
Not according to the world leaders of the health industry. On August 1, 2007, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Heart Association (AHA) unveiled updated physical activity recommendations for the 40 plus population.
The minimum recommendations are as follows:
• Do moderately intense aerobic exercise, 30 minutes a day, five days a week or do vigorously intense aerobic exercise 20 minutes a day, three days a week
• Do strength training exercises, twice to three times per week
• Do flexibility exercises each day you perform strength training exercises
• Adults with injury, medication or illness should seek the advice of qualified professionals
• Exercise should be performed in a comfortable and supportive environment
• If you can exceed the minimum recommendations, do it!
Are you getting enough?
